Expat Easter in Denmark

Easter is coming up and along with the holiday a possibility for hard working people to relax and spend some time with their family.

For many Danes Easter includes a variety of traditions. These include decorating the home with handpainted Easter eggs (or home-bought ones, should one's creative streak fail) and bringing in fresh daffodils for display around the house.

A major tradition for children, and any Easter egg chocolate lovers, is making a "Gækkebrev" (a fool's letter). It compares a bit to the American Valentine, and is a homemade paper clipping with a short spring poem or riddle.

The letter is signed by an amount of dots equivalent to the letters in the senders name. When you receive a "Gækkebrev" you must guess who the sender. If you can not guess the sender, you are "one playing games" (a fool) and you owe that sender an Easter egg. If you guess the sender, the sender must be the giver of an Easter egg.

Another tradition is gathering the family for a "Påskefrokost", or Easter lunch. The food compares to the Christmas lunch, and is somewhat justified by a famous line in a traditional Danish Christmas carol stating that Christmas lasts till Easter (Julen varer lige til påske...), eventhough Lent comes in between. Should you be discouraged from trying to put on an Easter lunch together yourself with all the trimmings, many restaurants put on "Påskebord" buffets during Easter holiday, so that you may have a chance to try it out without lifting a finger.

When not eating, Danes may enjoy a nice long walk in the Spring sun. They may also spend their holidays visiting museums around their neighborhood. Several libraries and museums are doing Easter workshops for children and adults alike to participate in. Another option is to find the nearest park, or even, in the case of Copenhagen, enjoy a trip to Tivoli or Bakken.

Expat in Denmark Picnic in Copenhagen's Dyrehaven

As wind, rain and snow turns to sunshine and balmy breeze, May presents a wonderful time to explore the Deer Park and have a picnic with fellow Expat in Denmark members.....and anyone else you'd like to bring along.

Together with our friends at Spousecare, we look forward to meeting in the deer park, taking a stroll with our families, and find a nice spot to sit and eat. Children are of course welcome!

For those who would be interested, we can head to Bakken afterwards and enjoy Bakken: one of the world's oldest amusement parks with roller coaster, carousels and a host of other attractions as well as bars and restaurants.
