Sustainable city, Future city, Eco-friendly...
We are not just talking about going Green, we are leading in practicing Green
Not only is the City of Copenhagen the home of the famous Little Mermaid and the Copenhagen Opera House, it has recently made its mark among the world’s top sustainable cities, where eco-friendly and practicality are the main principles behind new and upcoming infrastructure in the city.
Why is Copenhagen on the tip of almost every Green infrastructure-“list”?
Well there is one thing Copenhagen is doing right if one can put it that way. It has introduced the concept of Copenhagenization. As the new term goes Copenhagenization, is the new “black” in the area of transportation that is this concept describes how bicycling has now become a social phenomenon.
Being the first city to start this revolution, cycling has become the people’s choice of transport, more than half of the adults in Copenhagen bicycle to and from work daily. This is because on the one hand, many cities are congested with cars (automobiles) and pollution is on the increase, these cities are at their wits end finding more solutions as to how to expand transport routes for automobiles but Copenhagen on the other hand is now expanding its previously narrow bicycle routes so that there is as much space for cyclist as there can be for easy and faster manoeuvring.
The new infrastructural development can be felt and seen all over the capital city now as reconstruction of roads is creating a competition between automobiles and bicycles but this we can be rest assured is for the short run. The construction project is set to be completed very soon.
How come cycling now so popular???
In this future city two wheels rule and that is why the city of Copenhagen offers a wide range of both practical and funny bicycles so cycling isn’t only seen to be a thing for races but also for family transportation, where one can have more than one child on a bike.
There are many benefits in cycling some of which are seen as effective ways of helping to fight national problems on health. Cycling is also considered a social activity in terms of fun and leisure, you just name it, but the most salient of all reasons, why cycling is so popular in Copenhagen is that it is easier, cheaper and faster to get from A to B and moreover economically friendly on the environment as well.
Well that cannot be disagreed with can it? Using the public transport in Copenhagen during rush hour takes twice as much the time needed to get from one place to the other as everybody is trying to catch a train, the next bus, pick up their kids and what have you. However, on the bicycle your restrictions are the traffic lights and automobiles blocking your way as a result more room is being created for bicycles in the city of Copenhagen.
World’s cycling tour promotes Copenhaganization
It is not more than roughly two months ago that Copenhaganization became a word on the mouths of many so what better way to promote this phenomenon than for Copenhagen to be the host and starting place for the 2011 UCI Road World Championships cycling tour from the 19th to 25th of September?
Yes, Copenhagen is this year’s starting place for the UCI Tour and so if you happen to find yourself in Copenhagen during these dates don’t forget to check out how Copenhaganization is bringing both famous racers to the city but also opening up the doors to a multitude of visitors to liven up the city of Copenhagen.
